Section 3

Gestation Crates

Gestation crates enclose pigs in a space of about seven by two feet, an area barely larger than the pig’s body. A mother pig will remain in this minuscule space for the entirety of her pregnancy, about 4 months (17). After long-term housing in these systems, mother pigs are subjected to laying in their waste and not being able to move. This causes skin infections, abrasions, viruses, and sickness. It also subjects the mother pigs to extreme emotional trauma, psychological issues, and stress. Often this practice is done repeatedly to the mother pig through artificial insemination. With Section 3 passed, this extreme animal abuse will be illegal across all 50 states.

Section 3 Legislation

3.3 CAFO’s or any animal facilities that are found to be using gestation crates or any other similar cage system to confine birthing animals shall be subject to fine and imprisonment.
